Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have my pool professionally serviced?

It depends on usage and season, but most pools benefit from weekly or biweekly service to maintain water balance, cleanliness, and proper equipment function. Regular maintenance prevents costly repairs and ensures safe swimming conditions.

What does professional pool service include?

A standard pool service typically includes:

  • Water testing and chemical balancing
  • Skimming and vacuuming debris
  • Brushing walls and tile
  • Cleaning the skimmer and pump baskets
  • Checking and maintaining filtration and circulation systems
  • Inspecting equipment for potential issues

Why is my pool water cloudy?

Cloudy water is often caused by imbalanced chemicals, poor filtration, or high contaminant levels (such as dirt, oils, or algae). Regular maintenance, proper filtration, and correct chemical levels help prevent this issue.

How long should I run my pool pump each day?

For optimal filtration, most pools require 12-24 hours of circulation daily, depending on pool size, temperature, and bather load. Running the pump ensures proper water turnover and prevents algae growth.  Variable Speed Pumps allow optimal 24-hour circulation with energy savings.  Variable speed pumps typically pay for themselves in energy savings.  Ask for an energy-savings comparison for your pump.

How often should I clean or backwash my pool filter?

  • Cartridge filters: Clean every weeks (or when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi above normal).
  • Sand filters: Backwash when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi above normal (typically every 4-6 weeks).
  • D.E. filters: Backwash and recharge D.E. powder when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi above normal; For those who open in May, deep clean end of June, end of August, then at closing.
    • Grid / elements will be damaged if the D.E. Filter is allowed to operate without D.E. powder or operated at high pressure (10 psi and above) for extended periods of time.

How do I know if my pool needs shocking?

You should shock your pool weekly or after heavy use, storms, or algae growth. Signs that your pool needs shocking include:

  • Cloudy or green water
  • Strong chlorine or musty odors
  • Skin and eye irritation after swimming

Why is my pool losing water?

Evaporation causes some water loss, but if you’re losing more than 1/4 inch per day, on days with high humidity, you may have a leak.   With warm water and cool days/nights, expect higher levels of water loss.

Check for:

  • Visible cracks in a plaster pool structure
  • Visible tears in the vinyl liner
  • Visible puckering on the floor of a vinyl liner
  • Wet spots around an above ground pool
  • Wet spots around the equipment pad

What should I do if my pool turns green?

A green pool usually indicates algae growth due to low chlorine levels or poor circulation. To fix it:

  • Test and balance the water (adjust pH, alkalinity, and chlorine).
  • Test and adjust Phosphates
  • Brush the pool thoroughly, then Shock the pool with a high dose of chlorine
  • Backwash / Clean the filter, then overfill the pool with water (for filters with multiport valves)
  • Allow the sediment to settle to the bottom, then Vacuum to Waste (if the pool equipment allows)
  • Vacuum the pool thoroughly.
  • Run the filter continuously until the water clears.
  • Test and re-balance the water.

Do I need to winterize my pool?

Yes! In colder climates, winterizing protects your pool from freezing damage, algae growth, and costly repairs. A professional pool closing service includes:

  • Draining water from pipes and equipment
  • Lowering the water level
  • Adding winterizing chemicals
  • Installing a safety cover

Can I maintain my pool myself, or should I hire a professional?

While DIY pool maintenance is possible, hiring a professional ensures consistent water quality, proper equipment function, and early detection of issues. Regular service saves time, effort, and costly repairs in the long run.
